One-Day In-Person Training
Join us for a comprehensive, hands-on training designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively inspect and maintain stormwater best management practices (BMPs) across Iowa. This certification program combines classroom instruction with real-world field experience to prepare you for the challenges of stormwater infrastructure management.
Training Overview
This full-day training runs from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm and covers essential topics including:
- BMP Types and Performance: Learn about bioretention cells, bioswales, permeable pavement, detention basins, stormwater wetlands, and more – including design considerations and factors affecting performance.
- Inspection Techniques: Master the use of inspection checklists, condition rating scales, and documentation methods. Understand how to identify maintenance needs and prioritize actions.
- Maintenance Strategies: Explore routine, corrective, and rehabilitative maintenance approaches for different BMP types, along with seasonal considerations.
- Vegetation Management: Learn to identify native and invasive plants and understand vegetation management for various stormwater practices.
- Field Practice: Get hands-on experience inspecting permeable pavers and bioretention cells, conducting infiltration tests, and documenting observations using standard checklists.
- Inspection Analysis: Practice completing inspections using drone footage of retention ponds and participate in group problem-solving discussions.

Loulou holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and serves as ISWEP’s Executive Director, translating research into practical stormwater management resources for Iowa communities.
Cameron Agan, Stormwater Specialist, City of Waterloo
Cameron brings practical, hands-on experience in municipal stormwater management and BMP inspection and maintenance from his work with the City of Waterloo.
Certification
Following the in-person training, attendees will complete an online assessment on their own time. A passing score is required to receive ICIMSP Certification.
