Regulations, Environmental Impacts, & Contracts
Cities with regulated stormwater programs in Iowa are required to prevent contaminants from entering waterways. Learn about the impacts of salt and recommendations aimed at reducing stormwater pollution. Get recommendations for crafting contracts that meet deicing objectives and client needs for safe conditions.

How Salt and Deicers Work
Pavement temperatures, weather, and the chemical makeup of various commercial salts and deicer liquids play a role in the success of using salt for deicing. A quick lesson on the basics of salt can go a long way in knowing when and how much salt to apply.

Dry and Liquid Salt Storage and Handling
Training experts will teach applicators about best management practices for storing and transfer of salt and liquid deicers such as secondary containment and recommended loading/unloading procedures.

Equipment, Calibration, and Application Rates
From augers to hand spreaders, the equipment for salt application is diverse. Learn how to properly calibrate using various tools and learn the rates at which salt should be applied to avoid over-salting, which can generate polluted stormwater runoff.

Weather and Monitoring Pavement Temperatures
Resources are available to track weather conditions and monitor pavement temperatures.
