About This Training
The Iowa Certified SWPPP Designer course trains professionals who prepare, review, and approve Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans for construction sites. This full-day training combines regulatory requirements, technical design principles, and hands-on exercises so you leave with skills you can apply immediately.
The training includes two hands-on exercises where you’ll practice BMP placement on site maps and review SWPPP narratives. Upon completion, you’ll be listed in the statewide database at IowaStormwater.org.
Earn 6.25 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).
Who Should Attend
This certification is designed for engineers, plan reviewers, municipal staff, environmental consultants, and anyone responsible for SWPPP development or implementation.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Create detailed, site-specific SWPPPs that effectively prevent erosion and control sediment
- Apply regulatory requirements for General Permit No. 2 compliance
- Implement appropriate erosion, sediment, and velocity control practices
- Incorporate good housekeeping pollution prevention measures
- Navigate the six phases of SWPPP preparation
- Properly implement a SWPPP at a construction site

Pat founded ISWEP in 2005 and developed its statewide certification and training programs. A Certified Professional Soil Scientist, she continues to serve ISWEP as an advisor and lead instructor.
Mike Heller, PWS, CPESC | Prairie Creek Environmental
Mike has worked with Midwest natural resources since 1992 as a wetland ecologist and stormwater manager. His experience includes SWPPP design and compliance, MS4 compliance, Section 404 permitting, and post-construction practice design.
