One of the best ways to deal with flooding is to restore our landscape so that it is better equipped to handle the water. \nCome on the tour to check out what Polk County\, the City of Des Moines\, and other communities have been doing to restore the landscape with green stormwater infrastructure\, such as wetlands\, oxbow restoration\, bioswales\, rain gardens and much more! This work not only helps to protects us from flooding\, but has created a beautiful and fun recreational trail for all to use. \nThe tour will be guided by John Swanson\, Polk County Water Resource Supervisor. \nThe trail is an easy\, flat and shaded trail. The ride will be about 8 miles one way. Learn about the impacts of salt and recommendations aimed at reducing stormwater pollution. Get recommendations for crafting contracts that meet deicing objectives and client needs for safe conditions. \nHow Salt and Deicers Work\nPavement temperatures\, weather\, and the chemical makeup of various commercial salts and deicer liquids play a role in the success of using salt for deicing. A quick lesson on the basics of salt can go a long way in knowing when and how much salt to apply. \nDry and Liquid Salt Storage and Handling\nTraining experts will teach applicators about best management practices for storing and transfer of salt and liquid deicers such as secondary containment and recommended loading/unloading procedures. \nEquipment\, Calibration\, and Application Rates\nFrom augers to hand spreaders\, the equipment for salt application is diverse.
