DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual training designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively inspect and maintain stormwater best management practices (BMPs) across Iowa. This certification program combines instruction with virtual inspection activities using drone footage to prepare you for the challenges of stormwater infrastructure management. \nTraining Overview\nThis training runs from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm and covers essential topics including: \n\nBMP Types and Performance: Learn about bioretention cells\, bioswales\, permeable pavement\, detention basins\, stormwater wetlands\, and more\, including design considerations and factors affecting performance.\nInspection Techniques: Master the use of inspection checklists\, condition rating scales\, and documentation methods. Understand how to identify maintenance needs and prioritize actions.\nMaintenance Strategies: Explore routine\, corrective\, and rehabilitative maintenance approaches for different BMP types\, along with seasonal considerations.\nVegetation Management: Learn to identify native and invasive plants and understand vegetation management for various stormwater practices.\nVirtual Inspection Activities: Practice inspecting stormwater practices using drone footage\, conducting visual assessments\, and documenting observations using standard checklists.\nInspection Analysis: Complete inspections using drone footage of retention ponds and participate in group problem-solving discussions.\n\nLearning Objectives\nBy the end of this training\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify common stormwater BMP types and understand their functions and performance factors\nConduct thorough inspections using standardized checklists and rating systems\nRecognize key indicators of BMP failure or maintenance needs\nDocument inspection findings accurately and prioritize maintenance actions\nApply appropriate maintenance strategies for different BMP types and seasonal conditions\nIdentify native and invasive plant species and understand vegetation management requirements\nDevelop maintenance recommendations based on inspection observations\n\nInstructors\nLoulou Dickey\, Executive Director\, ISWEP \nLoulou holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and serves as ISWEP’s Executive Director\, translating research into practical stormwater management resources for Iowa communities. \nCameron Agan\, Stormwater Specialist\, City of Waterloo \nCameron brings practical experience in municipal stormwater management and BMP inspection and maintenance from his work with the City of Waterloo. \nCertification\nFollowing the virtual training\, attendees will complete an online assessment on their own time.
